Sharks Drop Two At Roger Williams Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. – Competing in their third and fourth games on the week, Simmons Univeristy Volleyball took on the Lyons of Wheaton College and the Cardinals of Wesleyan University where the Sharks were bested, 3-2 against Wheaton and 3-0 against Wesleyan.

Simmons vs. Wheaton
  • Wheaton handled the Sharks in the opening set to take the 1-0 advantage. 
  • After Simmons held the 14-13 lead, the Lyons roared in dominant fashion to seal the second set by a score of 25-17.
  • Already on top, 13-8, the Sharks closed out the third to lead by 17-8 before taking the third, 25-20.
  • Steady scoring runs was the name of the game in the fourth but the Sharks had the last say as Simmons solidified the final three points to force the fifth set (26-24).
  • Down 14-8 in the fifth and final set, the Sharks continued to show grit, scoring three straight points before taking the 15-11 loss. 
Simmons vs. Wesleyan
  • The Cardinals came out of the gates strong, taking the first set by a score of 25-10 to take the 1-0 lead. 
  • Three straight points by the Sharks brought the score to, 12-9, but Wesleyan controlled the scoring the rest of the way to go on top, 2-0.
  • Kira Buonopane put down a kill in the third to make it a 7-7 game, but the Sharks' counterparts pulled away for the eventual win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Against Wheaton, senior Iliana Diaz booked a career-high 12 kills.
  • Junior Sumaya Barre recorded 16 assist against Wheaton to mark a new career-high.
  • The Sharks return to the Holmes Center to play the Salve Regina Seahawks at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 11.
