Falcons Narrowly Outlast Sharks In Extras To Spark Doubleheader Sweep

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Crossing state lines today, Simmons University Softball ventured to Connecticut to play the Albertus Magnus Falcons in league action. Extras were needed in game one as the home team prevailed by a score of 2-1 (ten innings) and then the Falcons made it a sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game.

Game One
  • Piper Kinney sat the Falcons down in order for three straight innings before the home team's bat came alive in timely fashion to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the top of the sixth, Zoe Soule led off the frame with a double to center field and soon found herself on third base after a Trinity Payne sac bunt. Soule's smart base running made it a tie-ball game after a wild pitch (1-1).
  • Albertus Magnus began the sixth with a lead-off single, but after Kinney struck out the next batter and forced a pop up, Emery Kreidel-Reimer fired down to second to catch the lead-off runner stealing to make it a one, two, three inning.
  • After a scoreless eighth inning, Emma Soule hit a single to center field to score Teagan Buckley to go on top, 2-1. However, the Falcons answered back in the bottom of the inning to knot up the score once again (2-2).
  • The Falcons held off the Sharks in the tenth and were able to orchestrate a run in the 10th to escape with the 3-2 win.
Game Two
  • Neither side crossed the plate in the first inning, but the Falcons came back in the following two innings to put up 7-0 lead after three innings.
  • Kinney earned a walk at the plate and after a wild pitch and a ground out, ended up 60 feet from home. Soule knocked Kinney in to bring the score to 7-1. Albertus Magnus maintained their seven-run cushion after getting that run back in the home half of the inning (8-1).
  • In their final at bats in the seventh, the Sharks connected on a pair of hits to start the rally but were able to just plate one run as the game ended with a score of 8-2.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Emma Soule booked her first two-hit game of the season in game one.
  • Zoe Soule connected on her third double of the year also in game one.
  • Piper Kinney matched her season-high with 12 strikeouts in the first game of the afternoon. It is also the third time this season the senior has reached 10 or more k's.
  • The Sharks look to bounce back tomorrow as they host the Thomas College Terriers in non-conference action at Daly Field starting at noon.
