Sharks Erupt For Seven Late Against Bluffton As Kinney Reaches 500 Strikeouts

CLERMONT, Fla. – After an off day yesterday, Simmons University Softball returned to the diamond to play Bluffton and Capital this morning at Hancock Park. In a fast moving first game, Simmons closed it out to take the 7-0 victory. Then, against, Capital, the Sharks took an early edge but the visitors came back for the 7-4 win.

Simmons vs. Bluffton
  • Starting pitcher Piper Kinney fanned the second batter of the home half of the second inning to reach her 500th career strikeout.
  • Kinney and her counterpart controlled the entire game, until the seventh inning when the Sharks put the ball in play to create chaos for the Beavers. With two down and runners on second and third, Trinity Payne hit a grounder to the third baseman who made an errant throw to first, allowing Kinney and Deleault to score (2-0). A walk and a hit by pitch, gave Zoe Soule the opportunity to knock in another run, followed by Lizzie Sidler who singled up the middle to make it a 5-0 ball game. Batting around the order, Kinney tripled to right center to bring the score to 7-0.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Kinney sat the Beavers down in order to earn the third shutout victory of the young season.
Simmons vs. Capital
  • Ally Hyde's patience at the plate paid off as the senior starting pitcher earned a walk to bring in the game's first run.
  • In the bottom of the second, Abigail Carvalho hit a two-run RBI double up the middle to plate a pair to make it 3-0 in favor of Simmons.
  • Capital got on the board in the third to make it a one-run game (3-2).
  • Nevaeh Eth launched her second home run of the season to double up the scoreboard, 4-2.
  • The visitors answered back with a homer of their own before putting a four-spot on the board in the fifth to lead, 7-4 for the eventual win.
