Greer Leads Soccer over Norwich, 4-0

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) tallied three points, including a goal to lead the Simmons College women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Norwich University this evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on a wind-fueled rainy Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won five of their last six games and improve to 8-6-2 overall, including 7-3-0 in league play, while the Cadets fall to 3-10-1 and 1-8-1.

Simmons controlled the match, outshooting Norwich, 33-8, while owning a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks. The home team scored all four goals in the first half of play.

Junior midfielder Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) blasted a hard shot from 30 yards out that sailed through the air and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season, just 7:22 into the opening half for a 1-0 Sharks' lead. First year Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) also took aim from long range for Simmons, depositing a shot into the right corner from 20 yards out for a 2-0 lead at the 14:39 mark. Gilbert took a feed from senior Paige Wilcox (East Sandwich, Mass.), who was playing in her final home regular-season match, and hooked a shot from the right side of the box and inside the near post for her seventh tally of the year. The marker gave the Sharks a 3-0 lead at 37:41 of the first half and the assist was the first collegiate point for Wilcox. Gilbert later sent a cross to the right post where first year Gabrielle Klane (Franklin, Mass.) met it with a shot in tight for her second goal of the season with just 1:41 left to go in the half for Simmons.

The Cadets were led by junior midfielder Clara Leister (Hartland, Vt.), who put a pair of shots on goal.

Junior keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) stopped the only shot she saw in the first half for the Sharks, before junior goalie Amber Verrill (Windham, Maine) turned away all three shots she saw in the second stanza. Sophomore keeper Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) made 15 saves for Norwich.

Simmons returns to action for it's final regular-season conference match on Saturday, October 25 when it heads to Newton, Mass. to take on Mount Ida College at 3:00 p.m., while the Cadets hosts Lasell College on the same day at 1:00 p.m. it their last home match of the season.
