Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons soccer (0-1) dropped their home opener to Wellesley College (0-1), 3-0, under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue took an early 1-0 lead, taking advantage of a Sharks miscue in the backfield. But the Sharks remained resilient. Five minutes later Wellesley looked poised to score again, but first-year goalkeeper
Deanna Wild kept it a one-goal deficit rejecting a shot attempt by Reika Ishibe.
Midway through the first half, Wellesley recorded the game-winning goal in 21
st minute off the foot of Olivia Chow-Gillette. Simmons continued to hang in against a tough Wellesley team with
Cerys Balmer and
Lauren Krupnikoff firing off shots, before the Blue added an insurance goal in the 33
rd minute.
Returning to the field at the start of the second half, the Sharks continued to show their resolve and broke up the stalemate. In the 62
nd minute, Simmons found the back of off net off a nearside corner kick to cut the deficit to two, 3-1. But it was as close as they would get.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- First-year goalkeeper Deanna Wild played all 90 minutes in goal, registering four saves.
- Graduate senior Cerys Balmer recorded a pair of shots on the day.
