Soccer Drops Home Opener to Wellesley, 3-1

Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons soccer (0-1) dropped their home opener to Wellesley College (0-1), 3-0, under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue took an early 1-0 lead, taking advantage of a Sharks miscue in the backfield. But the Sharks remained resilient. Five minutes later Wellesley looked poised to score again, but first-year goalkeeper Deanna Wild kept it a one-goal deficit rejecting a shot attempt by Reika Ishibe.

Midway through the first half, Wellesley recorded the game-winning goal in 21st minute off the foot of Olivia Chow-Gillette. Simmons continued to hang in against a tough Wellesley team with Cerys Balmer and Lauren Krupnikoff firing off shots, before the Blue added an insurance goal in the 33rd minute.

Returning to the field at the start of the second half, the Sharks continued to show their resolve and broke up the stalemate. In the 62nd minute, Simmons found the back of off net off a nearside corner kick to cut the deficit to two, 3-1. But it was as close as they would get.
