Sharks Roll Over AMCATS, 25-7

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Lacrosse scored 16 goals in the first half and nine in the second to defeat the Anna Maria AMCATS 25-7 Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. Freshman Mary Essa (Las Vegas, Nev.) tallied six goals in the Sharks victory.

The Sharks scored twice in the first minute of play off goals from Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) and Rachel Wallace (Braintree, Mass.) to set the tone of the first half. Becca Shea (Quincy, Mass.) added an unassisted goal before Essa scored a natural hatrick to increase the Sharks lead to six.

Sandy Acosta put the AMCATS on the scoreboard with 24:35 remaining in the half, but Avery Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) added two quick goals to keep the Sharks lead at six. Megan Coffey (Wilmot Flat, N.H.) found Leanne Luke (Newton, Mass.) in the arc who beat Anna Maria goalkeeper Marlena Donjacour before Amanda Hevy buried a shot past Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) to cut the Sharks lead to seven.

Caitlin McNamara (Abington, Mass.) added her first of two goals with 19:42 to play off an assist by Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) and Essa added two more for a ten-goal lead. Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored off an assist by Essa before Katie Schebel scored her first of five goals with 3:30 remaining in the half.

In the second half, the Sharks picked up where they left off with Essa scoring just 42 seconds in. Meaghan Maurice (Portland, Maine) and Wellie Antonellis (Keene, N.H.) each added two in the half while Symonne Fontenot (Portsmouth, N.H.), Callie Warnock (Kingston, Mass.), and McNamara each added one.

Katie Schebel scored on two free position shots and added third goal unassisted for the AMCATS in the second half.

Sharks goalkeepers Kelly Last and Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) combined for 11 saves for the win while Donjacour stopped 12 in the lost.

Simmons (7-7, 6-3 GNAC) returns to the field on Saturday, April 21st at home against Rhode Island College in a 1:00 p.m. start. The AMCATS (1-10, 0-8 GNAC) travel to Daniel Webster on April 19th for a 3:30 p.m. game.
