Martensson Leads Simmons Field Hockey Over Wheelock, 7-0

BOSTON, MA – Senior midfielder Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Simmons College field hockey team to a 7-0 victory over host Wheelock College this evening at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass.  The Sharks win their third straight match to improve to 4-1 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 0-6.

 

Simmons dominated the shots with a 39-4 count, including 19-0 in the first half that saw it score four unanswered goals.  The Sharks also held a 13-1 penalty corner advantage.

 

Martensson's first tally was her first of the season and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead at the 21:02 mark of the first half.  Her second score came a little over eight minutes later on a feed from freshman forward Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) for a 4-0 Sharks' margin at 29:25. 

 

Gagnon registered her second assist of the night when she fired a shot that sophomore forward Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) converted the rebound of for her second goal of the year and the first of the second half for a 5-0 lead just 3:29 into the period for Simmons.  Cronin later assisted on the Sharks' sixth goal, courtesy of freshman forward Hailey Bruno-Moulton's (South Berwick, Maine) first collegiate marker at 53:17.  Bruno-Mouton connected with freshman forward Maddie Koufos (Needham, Mass.) for her first collegiate goal as well to cap the scoring for the Sharks at 62:23 of the second half.

 

Freshman forward Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) collected her own rebound and found the back of the cage to put Simmons on the board just 4:14into the contest, before junior forward Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) tipped in freshman midfielder Amy Wilson's (Falmouth, Mass.) shot for her team-leading third goal of the season and a 2-0 margin at 17:39.

 

Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Cooper led Wheelock's offensive with three shots.

 

Freshman keeper Hope McDonald (Hingham, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory in her first start for the Sharks and made a pair of saves, while senior goalie Michelle Greene registered a double-digit save total for the sixth straight match with 17 for the Wildcats.  Sophomore midfielderJen Ryan also made a defensive save for Wheelock.

 

Wheelock will be in action again on Monday, September 23 when it hosts Western Connecticut State University at Winsor Field at 7:00 p.m. in a re-scheduled match from the September 1 rainout.  Simmons returns to play on September 15 when it hosts Wheaton College (MA) at 1:00 p.m.
